Nurture Your Inner Child in the Gambia!

 15-22 March 2019

“Learning to re-connect with and nurture our inner child is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves in adulthood” ~ Cezanne

Join me in the Gambia for 7 days of nurturing your Inner Child!

Didn’t know you had one?

‘All children are artists, the problem is how to remain one when we grow up’ ~ Pablo Picasso

We were all naturally creative as children, but somewhere between childhood and adulthood some of us ‘lose it’.

Is your inner child crying out to be heard?

I was a blocked writer and artist for over 15 years; on this Retreat, I’ll take you through the same processes I went through to unblock, based on the book I credit with helping me to unblock, ‘The Artist’s Way’ by Julia Cameron.  The workshops are playful, nurturing, and designed to coax your inner child from out of the dark recesses of your mind, so that you can reconnect with your natural creativity. You will return home with something you created, and the tools to keep your creative juices flowing!

All materials will be provided, and I will always be on hand to guide you through this process.

I will also be teaching the benefits of Colour Therapy more indepth (I do an introductory workshop on The Self Love Retreat).  I healed myself from Seasonal Affective Disorder (a form of depression caused by lack of natural sunlight) with the colours in my paintings.  You will return home with something you’ve created using colours that will help you on your own Self-healing journey!

Leading up to the Retreat, I’ll give you two easy exercises that will help prepare you; your Morning Pages, and your weekly ‘Artist’s Dates‘.  These will help you begin the process of nurturing your inner child!

The Nurture Your Inner Child Retreat will held at my newly built 6 bed Retreat Home in Gunjur, which is 10 mins walk to the beach.

sea view room

The total cost of the ‘Nurture Your Inner Child’ Retreat is only £599 per person (based on two sharing) which includes:

  • Airport transfers
  • Accommodation
  • Breakfast & Dinner
  • 5 Self nurturing workshops
  • All materials, including paints/brushes
  • Artist’s Date to feed your inner child IMAGES!

(N.B. Flights must be booked separately). There are only 8 PLACES (max) available to ensure you receive individual attention, book early to avoid disappointment!

Download the >> Booking Form <<, complete it and return to me by email asap

Use Your Subconscious Mind to Create the Life YOU Choose! (Part 1)

Have you ever heard the saying that we only use 5% or 10% maximum of our brain power?  Do you believe it?  Well it’s not true, it’s that consciously we only use up to 10%  – the rest is the domain of our sub-conscious mind.

So how did I, Cezanne, a simple Artist, Poetess and Author come to learn about the power of our subconscious mind?

I stumbled upon this information because I had to figure out what was going on in my OWN mind.  I mean, I was multi-talented, but was failing at everything I put my hands to; I just seemed to keep sabotaging my success in my career, relationships, family, money – my whole life was a mess!  So I needed to study the mind in order to fix mine, and I had no idea that it would take me on such a beautiful journey, which I’m going to take YOU on now…

So let me start by explaining what the sub-conscious mind is, and how it relates to the conscious mind, and the super-conscious mind.  Are you ready?  Okay, use your imagination to picture an iceberg…there are two parts to this iceberg; the smaller part is above sea level; however the majority of the iceberg is underwater. The part you can see above water represents your conscious mind, and the majority of the iceberg which is underwater represents your sub-conscious mind. The word sub relates to being ‘under’, like submerged, submarine and sub-conscious.  Therefore your sub-conscious is the part of your mind that is ‘under’ – it’s unseen.  Your conscious mind is on the surface, that’s the part of your mind that you and everyone else relates to.  But your subconscious mind is the bigger part of the iceberg – the other 90%.  See?

Another metaphor I like to use when referring to the subconscious mind is of it being underground; your thoughts are the seeds, your conscious mind is the gardener planting the seeds, and your subconscious mind is the fertile soil that the seeds are planted into.  My painting ‘Black Orchid’ illustrates this perfectly:

The black background represents the dark soil of the subconscious mind.  Her thought-seeds are being planted into the fertile soil, which then goes through various stages of germination and budding, until eventually it reaches full bloom.  She looks happy, so she must be planting positive thought-seeds in the garden of her mind. The affirmation for this painting is “I am blossoming!” which also means “I am prospering!”

Now here’s the catch; whether your thoughts are POSITIVE or NEGATIVE, they still go through this same process.   So are you planting positive thought-seeds, or negative thought-weeds in the garden of your mind?

You can choose whether to grow flowers, or to grow weeds, or like most gardens, they can both grow side by side.  Your job as the gardener is to consciously uproot negative thought-weeds and replace them with positive thought-seeds, in order to keep the garden of your mind well cultivated.  Because whatever’s growing in your subconscious mind is going to blossom at some point, for all around you to see…

Watch my video-poem ‘Fertile Soil‘ to get a better ‘inner-standing’ of this process, which I wrote and recorded in 2009 when I was learning how to uproot my negative thought-weeds and replace them with positive thought-seeds:

In Part Two, I’ll explain why it’s important to guard your subconscious mind, and how to guard your subconscious mind, click here to read it!

“I Need a MAN!” has gone VIRAL!

My poem “I Need a MAN!” has gone viral!  It’s been on my YouTube channel for over 2 years, but it wasn’t until my friend Gary downloaded it from YouTube and converted it into a regular video, that it has suddenly gone viral!  it’s been shared extensively, you may have seen it in a Whatsapp group, or on Facebook?  One of the videos posted in a FB group had over 800 comments, and 22 shares!

As is to be expected, the comments were both positive and negative, and people were questioning whether I was that woman, or just acting.  So I thought I should at least explain my thinking behind the concept!  First, here’s the video:

The original version is over 9 minutes long, and embodies 5 different types of Black Woman; The Career Woman (at the beginning of the video), who has spent the best part of her life building her career.  It has paid off in terms of material possessions, but her lack of investment in her relationships has left her man-less.  The poem also features the Conscious Sistar, the Single Mother, the Religious/Church Sister, and ‘Miss Bootilicious’, who is in touch with her sexuality.   (I’d say, there’s a piece of me in all of them!)

They all need a man, but they all have different needs!

For the record, I don’t live alone (I have three ‘suns’), I’m still working on having all the money in the bank I need, I don’t go ‘out with the girls’, I don’t have a King-sized bed, etc. etc. But I DO like ‘fullly melanated’ brothers, I DO need someone who’s business-minded, and am remaining celibate until I meet ‘The One’!

I wrote “I Need a MAN!” in 2009, which mentioned doing the ‘6 Month Test’.  When I was led to write the book ‘How to Get the Ring On Your Finger’ in 2013, it explained how to do the 6 Month Test fully. (FREE to download when you subscribe, or available on Amazon or Lulu in paperback).  This was not a conscious decision on my part!

Much of what I write is ‘auto-written’, (meaning I don’t have to think it up, it just comes through me).  The 6 Month Test will help you to avoid jumping into bed with a man (or woman) until you are sure the person is right for you.  It will help you build a solid foundation upon which to build a committed relationship leading to marriage as opposed to long (or short) term dating.

The poem was also an experiment in the Law of Attraction; what would happen if you get really clear about what you desire in a man (or woman), and write it down?  The power of the written and spoken word, is what this poem is all about.  Watch my recent live performance of “I Need a MAN!”

Listen to the full length version on my Soundcloud (some naughty bits in it, but nice!)

The Truth about the Letter (featured in Year One)

In Year One of my Self-help novel ‘Journey of a Sister’ the main character Suzanne wrote a fearless letter to God asking all the questions the church couldn’t answer, and ended it by asking for “the Truth!”

She knew many of her brothers and sisters in Christ wanted to ask these same questions but were too scared for fear of God’s wrath, so she decided to stand in proxy for them.

The letter boldly questioned the Adam and Eve story, which opened the door for religion to make women subservient to men.  It also questioned the whole battle between God and the devil, which we, God’s creation, are supposedly caught in between.  The letter further questioned God’s ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ character; on one hand loving the world so much that He sent His only son as a blood sacrifice for our ‘sins’.  Yet on the other hand, the bible portrays God as this vengeful, jealous figure who had anger management issues.  Not only did He strike people dead with plagues, famine and war whenever he felt like it, He also supported groups of people in raping, plundering and killing others and stealing their land and inheritance.  Suzanne couldn’t relate to this second character, as she had only experienced God as Pure, Unconditional Love.

She asked why, even after praying in the name of Jesus, meditating on His word, and even fasting sometimes, she still had so many needs.  She had hit rock bottom when she wrote the letter, which marked a turning-point in her life.  She desperately wanted to figure out how to get her life to work.

Now, the truth about the letter:

While the letter was brilliantly constructed, it wasn’t something I took any time to sit and think about; it was an inspired letter that was ‘auto-written’, meaning I didn’t have to think about what I was writing, just like my inspired poems ‘Jesus Never Left You’, “Call Me By My Name!” (Jehovah), and “Look to Me!” (God’s reply to Suzanne’s letter which also features in Year One):

Reading the letter, you might wonder why God would inspire such questions.  The truth is, God was simply responding to the questions many of us have been asking in our heads but haven’t verbalized, because we’ve been told ‘not to question the infallible Word of God’ – as if God no longer speaks.

It was only after asking these questions that I began to receive the answers, and learnt ‘the Truth’, which I’m now sharing with you through this Self-help novel.  In fact, I had not intention of ever sharing the letter publicly, but when I started writing Year One, I was led to include the letter.  My response was “Are You sure?”.  I felt as if I was putting my life on the line by sharing it in the book, but surprisingly, many people have said they’ve asked the same questions!

Leaving a Legacy & December Events!

Last week was an event-full week!

On Saturday I attended the Legacy Gala where we championed people within our community who were making a positive impact and leaving a legacy (maybe I’ll be included next year!)  An old friend of mine, Marlon ‘Kush’ Palmer received an award for his contributions to showcasing Black films over the last 20 years (I designed his very first logo!).

marlon

I was interviewed at the Gala by ‘No Ordinary Woman’ Chat Show about my novel ‘Journey of a Sister’ – it was a coincidence that I’d only met the presenter Caz-Maz a few days earlier at the Mayor of Southwark’s Office! (That’s another story!)

legacy-interview

And last Thursday, I attended the Premier Screening of ‘Birth of a Nation’.  It wasn’t what I expected, as most of the film simply promoted white supremacy, and blatantly showed how the bible was used to subdue my ancestors and turn them docile.  I thought I was going to see an empowering film about revolution, but for me, ‘The Birth of a Nation’ was really about the birth of white supremacy through the enslavement of my ancestors.  As the descendant of an enslaved African, in my opinion, this film did nothing to empower me, and did nothing to honour my ancestors.

The bright side was, I had the opportunity to perform my poem “Who Am I?” before the film started.  It was befitting for me to perform this particular poem, because when I was in Ghana in November 2014, I performed this same poem in the dungeons where my ancestors were held in squalid conditions before being torn from their Motherland and shipped from Cape Coast (one of them was called ‘The Good Ship Jesus’).  I performed it right on the spot where my ancestors were held captive. It was also the 8th anniversary of my grandmothers passing:

It took me a year to write about my experiences in Ghana, but the last two chapters of my revised Self-help novel now titled ‘Journey of a Sister’ are based upon my experiences there. Get your paperback here (ships worldwide).

Anyway, the following day (Friday), I went to see the play ‘So You Think I’m Crazy?’ at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in Tottenham, North London.  Brilliant acting, which again portrayed the many ways my people are under psychological attack – this time through the Mental Health system.  Here’s a clip:

Religion, mainstream media, the food we eat, the music we listen to, and the (mis) education system, are some of the ways we battle psychological warfare.

Along my own Self-healing journey, I studied how the mind works in order to heal myself from depression and self-sabotage.  I learnt that our childhood programming determines how we think and act as adults.  As someone who was indoctrinated into a religion from a very young age, it took me years to un-indoctrinate myself.  On top of that, I’m still going through the process of re-programming my subconscious mind from the negative words and beatings I received as a child (that’s how deep it goes!)  I now know that the whippings my ancestors received were to break them down mentally in order to control them physically.  My parent’s generation were simply enacting their genetic coding of beating their children mercilessly, being emotionally detached from them, speaking negatively to them (e.g. “You are worthless/good for nothing/ugly…”), and taking them to church to be indoctrinated to be humble servants.  I am grateful for my upbringing, because that’s what has led me to the path I’m on today; to help my people ‘break free from mental slavery’.

Religion is a Mind Control tool.  When coupled with the slave mentality, it leaves our minds weak and susceptible to any suggestion made to them.  I seek to work with those who are raising the next generation, because as Frederick Douglas said, “It’s easier to raise strong children than to mend broken adults”. If you are committed to the process of healing, read my Self-help books!

After watching the film ‘Sankofa’ in 2010, I cried out to my ancestors and asked them what I could do to help my people heal.  The following morning, I played the guitar track and recorded ‘We Belong Together’ in my home studio (I recorded it first, then wrote it after – it was channeled!):

Since then I’ve also written ‘Journey of a Sister’ and ‘How to Get the Ring On Your Finger’ (which has contributions from over 30 brothers).  Both books look at how our PAST has affected the way we relate to each other TODAY. They will help you begin the process of Self-healing, and help you build Self Love, Love for your race, Self-dignity and Pride in who you are.

These are the legacies I am leaving for my commUNITY, read them!  You can download ‘How to Get the Ring On Your Finger’ FREE when you subscribe, or get both paperbacks signed by me from the Books page for only £14.99! (ships worldwide, Paypal will convert currency).

The Story of My Inner Child

Growing up, I had a natural ability to write and draw; my two favourite subjects at school were English Literature and Art. However, I never pursued a career in any of these areas because I lacked self confidence and didn’t believe in myself or my abilities.

As a child, I was constantly told I was worthless, good-for-nothing, didn’t deserve it (anything I wanted), and that I was ugly. These heterosuggestions went deep into my subconscious mind, and became the program I ran on as an adult. I subconsciousy believed anything I produced was also worthless, good for nothing, and ugly. 💭

I grew up with low self-esteem,  lacked self-confidence, and didn’t believe in myself.  I would screw up any piece of writing or drawings I did, because I thought they weren’t good enough – a reflection of how I felt about myself! 🤕

So instead of pursuing a career that utilized my natural God-given talents, I ended up doing Accounts, when maths was my worst subject at school! 🤦🏾‍♀️

By my mid twenties, I had stopped being creative altogether.  This was the last picture I drew (using pastels) back in 1986:

Alexander O'Neal

Clearly you can see I was good at art, but my perception of myself was reflected in how I viewed my work.  My boyfriend/lover/friend had asked me to do a portrait of his favourite singer, Alexandra O’Neal from the record sleeve; when he saw my creation, he threw the original on the floor!

Still, I remained a blocked writer and artist for over 20 years after that.  My inner child was crying out to be heard, but I ignored her.

I was unfulfilled, and miserable in my job as an Accounts Clerk.

After the birth of my second ‘sun’ in 1995, I decided I wanted to do something that would work around them.  I wanted to go back to being creative, but I didn’t know how.  A book came into my life calld ‘The Artist’s Way’ by Julia Cameron, which helped me begin the process of unblocking.

The Artists Way

This book literally saved my inner child’s life!  I didn’t just read it, I did all the daily and weekly tasks  (it’s a 12-week course).  The first thing I was required to do was to start writing my Morning Pages, 3 A4 pages every morning of any thoughts that came to mind (it didn’t have to make sense).  The second thing was to take my inner child on weekly ‘Artist Dates‘.  This was fun!

Some parts of the process involved going deep into the recesses of my mind, to uncover where that critical voice in my head was coming from that kept saying “You? A great artist? LOL” or “You? A best-selling author? You could never amount to that!” .  The exercises helped me get to the root cause of my insecurities, and to begin counter-attacking them with POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS like “I am a brilliant and successful artist”, “I am a prolific writer”, “I have rich creative talents”, “I am confident and competent in my creative work”, “I am a channel for the Creator to create through”, in order to get my creative juices flowing again.

‘The Artist’s Way’ taught me how to nurture my inner child, and to  give her the freedom she desired to create. As the adult, I had to learn how to step out of the way, and allow her to be free.

Before the end of the 12 week course, I was writing and painting freely!

The first painting I did when I unblocked as an artist in 2009 was of my inner child, and one of the first poems I wrote was called ‘My Artist Child’ (inspired by ‘The Artist’s Way’) which explains the inner struggle I went through to set my inner child free:

Cezanne (my artist) is a child.

I call to her, and she answers me

With a poem, a dance, and a squiggle-diddy!

She loves to be free, my artist

Free to explore her creativity

With no limitations, or boundaries

So what’s stopping her?

Me.

Yes ME, the adult,

Constrained in what I can see

Stuck in my blocks, and adult mentality;

“YOU CAN’T DO THAT!” I scold,

As she tries to break free;

“I want to paint!” she says.

“NO!” I reply,

(frightened of what she may tell of me,

as she paints away freely)

“I want to write!” she cries.

“No, NO!” I squeal,

(At the thought of my thoughts on paper,

she may reveal!)

“I want to dance!” she pleads.

“No, no, NO!” my senses scream

“At your age, start to….PRANCE??”

“Please, can I sing?” she begs…

She wants to paint!

She wants to write!

She wants to dance!

She wants to sing!

How can I deny my artist-child these things?

How can I refuse her the right

To be free to express her creativity?

So….I give her the paints, AND the time of day.

I give her the dance classes she’s always craved.

I allow her to write when her spirit takes

And to sing, yes to sing with the voice that God gave!

I take her out on our ‘Artist’s Dates’

And feed her IMAGES for her to relate

Back to her play-play-work-day…

Now my child, GO and CREATE!

As you can see, there was a real struggle going on between my adult self, filled with ego, self-consciousness, and learned restrictions, and my uninhibited, free-spirited inner child.  Thank goodness, my inner child won! 😅

So when I started writing my novel (now re-titled Journey of a Sister) my job as the adult was simply to step out of the way and let her be free. I used the painting My Inner Child to illustrate the front cover of the e-book for Year Two, because there’s a part in there where Suzanne inspires Charles to awaken his inner child! (in the section ‘Lace Seduction’).

Cezanne’s mission is to ‘Spread Love through Creativity’

The thing I love about my inner child is her ability to write about adult topics with the uninhibited innocence of a child, and to express herself in a way that I (the adult) wouldn’t dare to!  When I was writing ‘Journey of a Sister’ I kept hearing that critical voice inside my head saying “You can’t write that!”, but I just ignored it and allowed my inner child the freedom to write whatever she chose…so in 2009 I felt compelled to write ‘Part Two‘ to my poem:

My inner child is wild and free – she has no boundaries!

When I decided to set her free I KNEW it would cost me my privacy!

(and anyone who’s had anything to do with me

so if that’s you, I’m sorry.)

She sits in the seat of my subconscious mind observing all I’m doing

Then she turns my experiences into a song, story or poem!

Thanks to her, my life is an open book,

Go on, open it, take a look!

And she’s left me (the adult) to deal with all the DRAMA she creates

She doesn’t know where to draw the line!

I know I should be embarrassed, but to be honest,

All I keep seeing are POUND SIGNS ££££££££!

Where Did the Name ‘Cezanne’ Come From?

Cezanne is my ‘spiritual’ name.  What do I mean by that?

When I was  around 14 years old, I was in the back of class one day at school, doodling on the back of my textbook (obviously bored!).  As I was drawing randomly, the name ‘Cezanne’ appeared in the doodles!  The name stuck in the back of my mind all the years I was a blocked writer and artist, and only came back to me when I had to name my inner child as part of the course in Julia Cameron’s book ‘The Artist’s Way‘.

I’ve now changed my name by Deed Poll, in the hope that eventually, my inner child will take over completely!  Setting her free has enabled me to write and record over 30 poems, write 3 books (one is the Book of Lyrics to my award-winning poetry collection ‘Seeds of Love‘), painted 11 paintings, and I’m still creating, including building this website, writing my first speech, and developing workshops for my Retreats!

Join me on the ‘Nurture Your Inner Child’ Retreat!

Would you like me to take you through the same processes I went through to unblock as a writer and artist?  Then join me for 7 days of work-play in the sun!  This is essentially a 7-day holiday for both women and men, with 5 days of workshops thrown in (you can do as much or as little as you like!).  All materials are included, as well as accommodation, daily meals, and 5 days of nurturing your inner child!  You’ll return home with something you have created, and the tools to keep your creative juices flowing!   As part of the course, I will also teach Colour Therapy (I healed myself from Seasonal Affective Disorder using the colours in my paintings!)

Visit my Art page to learn about the Colours & Symbolism in my paintings and to download them to your device so you can benefit from the Colour Therapy in them too!
